Hi Guys,

I'm noticing my linux server's aren't detecting their storage
correctly. Before I go dig in to the code to fix it, I was wondering
if anyone else had noticed this.

Same version of Debian, and the same inventory agent (latest
production version)

Working System with IDE drives:

Name Manufacturer Model Description Type Disk size (MB) Serial number
Version
hdb Maxtor Maxtor 6E030L0 IDE disk 29326 E1A69XME NAR61590
hdd HL-DT-ST GCE-8160B IDE cdrom 0 2.01
hdc LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S IDE cdrom 0 PS05
hda Seagate ST3500630A IDE disk 476940 9QG98QGP 3.AAF

Not working system with SATA drives:

ame Manufacturer Model Description Type Disk size (MB) Serial number
Version
IDE disk 117220 SATA_WDC_WD1200JD-00WD-WMAL91597760
IDE disk 117220 SATA_WDC_WD1200JD-00WD-WMAL91600719
IDE disk 117220 SATA_WDC_WD1200JD-00WD-WMALA1035992
WD USB disk 488386 WD_My_Book_57442D574341535530393935323133-0:0
IDE cd 0

Is anyone else noticing this with the current Unified Agent?

Thanks,

James

PS: is there an archive of this list I could review somewhere for
background of issues etc?

Hi James,

I currently run the Unix agent under ubuntu and I get my SATA hard drive in ocsreports :

sda Seagate ST9200423ASG SATA disk 190782 ST9200423ASG_5TH0BL9S DE16

There is maybe a problem with your disk model ? Maybe we could improve the Linux/Storages.pm module to resolv your problem.

Kind regards,

Hi Guillaume,

Thanks for the info. That is interesting that you are getting valid
reports for sata disks.

I'm suspecting it's more of an OS or controller type problem, as I am
seeing this on 2 instances of Debian 5.0.4 with different disks, and
presumably different controller cards.

Although, it looks like you mat not be getting the correct serial
number on your report as well, as I believe the seagate serials are
just the last part, and not model + serial

Are your drives directly attached to the motherboard, or via a
controller array?

Is there a test suite of all potential outputs for us to verify parser
changes against?

Thanks,

James

Hi James,

The hard drive that I shown in my previous mail in an hard drive into a laptop and so I cannot remove it (because of the warranty) to verify the serial number and my BIOS does not get informations about the serial number of the hard drive...I will have to trust my Linux system for the moment :) :).

The hard drive informations are taken from udev. In fact, Linux/Storages.pm take a look in the /dev/.udev/db directory and search for files with names like <something>:<sd|hd><a|b|c|d|etc...> and get hard drives informations from these files. In my case, Linux/Storages.pm look at the /dev/.udev/db/block:sda and get these informations :

N:sda
S:block/8:0
S:disk/by-id/ata-ST9200423ASG_5TH0BL9S
S:disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_ST9200423ASG_5TH0BL9S
S:disk/by-path/pci-0000:00:1f.2-scsi-0:0:0:0
W:45
E:ID_TYPE=disk
E:ID_BUS=ata
E:ID_MODEL=ST9200423ASG
E:ID_MODEL_ENC=ST9200423ASG\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20
E:ID_REVISION=DE16
E:ID_SERIAL=ST9200423ASG_5TH0BL9S
E:ID_SERIAL_SHORT=5TH0BL9S
E:ID_SCSI_COMPAT=SATA_ST9200423ASG_5TH0BL9S
E:ID_PATH=pci-0000:00:1f.2-scsi-0:0:0:0
E:DKD_MEDIA_AVAILABLE=1
E:DKD_PARTITION_TABLE=1
E:DKD_PARTITION_TABLE_SCHEME=mbr
E:DKD_PRESENTATION_NOPOLICY=0

To verify the hard drives informations in your Debian system, you first have to take a look here :) :). Moreover, you can get informations about your hard drives using the dmesg command too, to verify if these informations are well read by the OS.

Kind regards,

Guillaume
